Freelance Bookkeeper

VA Staff is recruiting on behalf of a U.S.-based non-profit organization seeking an experienced Non-Profit Bookkeeper & IRS Compliance Specialist.

This role is ideal for someone with extensive experience in U.S. non-profit accounting, bookkeeping, and IRS compliance. The successful candidate will help organize financial records, identify missing tax filings, and prepare all necessary documentation to bring the organization back into compliance with IRS requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and organize historical financial records
  • Reconcile bank accounts and bookkeeping records
  • Identify outstanding IRS filing requirements
  • Prepare and file required IRS forms, including Form 990 series (as applicable)
  • Ensure financial records are accurate, complete, and audit-ready
  • Assist the organization in restoring and maintaining IRS compliance
  • Recommend bookkeeping processes and compliance best practices
  • Communicate with the client regarding required documentation and filing status
Qualifications
  • Proven experience in U.S. non-profit bookkeeping
  • Strong understanding of IRS requirements for 501(c) organizations
  • Experience preparing and filing IRS Form 990, 990-EZ, or 990-N
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks or similar accounting software
  • Excellent bookkeeping, reconciliation, and recordkeeping skills
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining confidentiality
Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA, Enrolled Agent (EA), or equivalent accounting credential
  • Previous experience helping non-profit organizations regain IRS compliance
  • Knowledge of state charitable registration and reporting requirements
  • Experience handling multiple years of overdue filings
What We're Looking For We're seeking a proactive professional who can take ownership of the compliance process, identify outstanding requirements, and help our client establish accurate financial records while ensuring ongoing IRS compliance.
