The Role

OpenTrain is seeking experienced Full-Stack Software Engineers to work as QA Reviewers for coding tasks and unit tests. You will conduct detailed quality reviews of coding artifacts, verify task correctness, evaluate testing approaches, and provide actionable feedback.

The role requires a minimum of five years of full-stack software development experience, with a focus on code review and quality assurance. Strong proficiency in Python or JavaScript is essential, and you will be assigned to work on one of those languages. The position is listed as entry level in the project data but requires the technical experience described in the qualifications.

What You’ll Do

You will review coding artifacts and unit tests in depth, checking their correctness, structure, clarity, and functionality. You will work with other QA reviewers and stakeholders to improve review consistency, resolve ambiguities, and scale an efficient quality assurance process.

• Review coding tasks and unit tests for correctness and completeness
• Analyze, debug, and evaluate complex codebases and technical artifacts
• Identify errors, redundancies, gaps, and ambiguities
• Provide detailed, constructive feedback on code quality, structure, and functionality
• Verify that coding tasks meet defined quality standards
• Refine QA rubrics to improve quality and efficiency
• Collaborate with stakeholders to address unclear requirements and inefficient processes
• Work with a team of QA reviewers to support consistency at scale

Qualifications and Requirements

You should be comfortable evaluating software written in Python or JavaScript and explaining technical findings clearly. Strong written and verbal English communication is mandatory because the work involves detailed feedback, documentation improvement, and collaboration.

Candidates based outside the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, or Australia must provide documentation demonstrating C1 or C2 English proficiency, such as IELTS, TOEFL, or an equivalent certification.

• At least five years of full-stack software development experience
• Experience with code reviews and quality assurance
• Strong proficiency in Python or JavaScript
• The ability to report your years of full-stack experience in both JavaScript and Python, even though the assignment uses one language
• Extensive experience writing, testing, and reviewing code
• Deep understanding of unit testing frameworks and best practices
• Ability to analyze, debug, and evaluate complex codebases
• Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
• Exceptional attention to detail
• Ability to identify gaps, redundancies, and ambiguities in coding tasks and unit tests
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Experience providing clear, constructive feedback
• Teaching or mentoring experience in coding environments is a plus
• Experience with LLM training for coding is highly preferred

Required Technical Assessment

Before the interview is completed, applicants must answer both technical questions below. Your responses should demonstrate practical code review, debugging, annotation, and communication skills.

Question 1: Code Review and Debugging. Review this Python function: def calculate_average(numbers): total = 0; for num in numbers: total += num; average = total / len(numbers); return average. Identify at least two potential issues or improvements, and explain why each suggestion is necessary.

Question 2: Annotating Code for AI Training. Add clear inline comments to explain each line of this JavaScript function and highlight assumptions or edge cases: function isPalindrome(str) { str = str.toLowerCase().replace(/[^a-z0-9]/g, ''); let reversedStr = str.split('').reverse().join(''); return str === reversedStr; } Comments should be concise and written to teach an AI system how the code works.

• Comment each line of the JavaScript function
• Identify assumptions and edge cases in the palindrome function
• Demonstrate clear, technically accurate written communication
